How is business data valued?

Business data is valued for a particular use and set of licensing terms. File count alone is not a reliable price estimate. An appraisal considers usefulness, coverage, quality, preparation effort, available rights and buyer demand.

Usefulness comes before volume

Start with the task the collection could support. Records that explain specialist decisions may serve a different purpose from records that only show a transaction total.

  • Which workflow does the data capture?
  • Are decisions linked to supporting evidence and outcomes?
  • What context would an unfamiliar analyst need?

Coverage and quality change the work required

Document what is present as well as what is missing. Preparation effort affects whether a collection is practical to license.

  • Time range, record counts and update frequency.
  • Consistency of fields, formats and identifiers.
  • Duplicates, missing values and gaps in history.
  • Availability of explanations and source history.

Rights and terms are part of the valuation

Compare offers on more than headline price. A proposed use, duration or exclusivity requirement can change what you are agreeing to provide.

  • Permitted uses and named recipients.
  • Exclusive or non-exclusive access, as agreed.
  • One-time delivery or ongoing updates.
  • Preparation, review and delivery responsibilities.

What a useful appraisal should clarify

Ask for the reasoning behind an assessment and the conditions it depends on. Treat an indication of potential value separately from a buyer offer.

  • Potential uses and remaining uncertainty.
  • Preparation steps and material limitations.
  • Questions about rights or permissions.
  • What would need to happen before an offer could be evaluated.

Common questions

Can I estimate a price per row?

A per-row price can obscure differences in context, completeness, rights and usefulness. First establish what a buyer would receive and be allowed to do with it.

Will exclusivity make my data worth more?

It may affect an offer, but there is no guaranteed premium. Consider the scope and duration of exclusivity and what future uses it would restrict.

Should I clean everything before an appraisal?

Start with an inventory and a description of known issues. Agree on the likely use and preparation scope before investing in a full cleanup.

Start with a description of your records.
